Molecular and Elemental Imaging in Biosciences (MEIBio)

Multimodal imaging combines two or more imaging techniques. Its palette contains a variety of specialized visualisation methods for imaging different structures, microenvironments, biomolecules and probes present in the sample under investigation.

Imaging methods are the key to our understanding of the structural organization of biological specimen: essentially, all of our knowledge on the anatomy of cells and multicellular organisms comes from studies, in which imaging methods were the key technologies.

The NIH defines multimodal imaging as the "Next-Generation of Clinical Imaging Platforms" (NIH PAR 10- 169).

We wish to combine for the first time these efforts for a unique PhD program named "Molecular and Elemental Imaging in Biosciences (MEIBio)" within the Vienna University of Technology.

Main Goals for MEIBio:

  1. For multimodal imaging typically only two imaging techniques are taken into account for innovative combination approaches. The proposed PhD program takes this idea one step further and implements new emerging technologies (i.e. mass spectrometry imaging) in optical methods (i.e. fluorescence, infrared) well recognized in the field of microscopy. This analytical approach allows adding unbiased information of more than one analyte (parallel detection in mass spectrometry) to spectral information with high specificity (identification of molecule), high lateral resolution and high potential for quantification.
  2. The proposed program intends to develop multimodal imaging for instrument combinations not yet combined.
  3. Finally this PhD program intends to superimpose spectral, elemental and molecular information on objects to gather 3D images of high lateral resolution (even below limits of diffraction which the classical limit for imaging methods) containing also elemental and molecular information.
